Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1 small green cabbage head, chopped (about 4 cups)
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Equipment

  • Skillet or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon
  • Sharp knife

Method

  1. Heat a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the ground beef, garlic, and diced onion. Cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until it’s browned and crumbly. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the chopped cabbage, diced tomatoes (with their juices), tomato sauce, beef broth, paprika, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together thoroughly.
  3. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid, and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  4. When the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded beautifully, it’s ready to serve! Dish it up as-is or over cooked rice for an extra hearty meal.

Notes

For an added flavor boost, use fire-roasted diced tomatoes or a splash of Worcestershire sauce.
