Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ½ cup cold butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • cup white sugar, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 cups apples - peeled, cored and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Method

  1. Make the topping: In a bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Add the cold butter pieces and mix with a fork (or your fingers) until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the walnuts.
  2. Prepare the apple filling: In another small bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, ginger, and cinnamon. Place the chopped apples in the slow cooker, sprinkle the sugar mixture over, and mix well. Drizzle with lemon juice and toss to coat evenly.
  3. Assemble: Spread the prepared topping over the apples. Cover and cook on Low for 4 hours (or High for 2 hours) until the apples are tender.
  4. Let it set: Once done, turn off the slow cooker, partially uncover, and let it rest for about 1 hour to allow the topping to harden slightly.

Notes

Pro Tip: If your slow cooker tends to run hot, you might want to check the apples earlier to avoid overcooking.
