Ingredients

  • Cooking spray Cooking spray
  • 1 16-oz. loaf sliced brioche bread
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 cups half-and-half
  • 2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Method

  1. Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Cut the brioche into squares and arrange them in the dish in rows.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until smooth, then add the half-and-half, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring every piece is soaked. Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  5. In another bowl, mix brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the softened butter and work it into the mixture until you get a crumbly paste.
  6. Remove plastic wrap and sprinkle the topping evenly over the casserole.
  7. Bake, uncovered, for 45–50 minutes or until golden and set. A knife inserted into the center should come out moist but clean.
  8. Let the casserole cool on a rack for 20 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar and serve warm.

Notes

Tip: If you don’t own a 9x13-inch pan or are making a smaller portion, you can easily halve this recipe and use an 8x8-inch dish instead.
